Instead of some crazy promotion, discount or give away, this Black Friday, I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different… more worthwhile.
Let’s just pause and be really honest for a minute...
Would a few quid off a new luxury watch make a dramatic impact on your life?
That’s why I thought, let’s instead use that money, to save lives at sea.
As sea farers ourselves, we know all too well that the sea can be as treacherous as it is beautiful.
Weather conditions can turn on a sixpence, equipment can fail and a changing tide can sneak up on you. With winter approaching fast, this places a huge demand on volunteer lifeboat crews.
Over 100+ lifeboat launches are expected, in the week from Christmas eve to New years day alone.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was founded in 1824, with the first RNLI station in Ireland established in Arklow, Co Wicklow, in 1826. The RNLI operates a 24-hour search and rescue service from 238 stations around the coastlines of Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.
I will be eternally grateful to the incredible volunteer heroes of the RNLI.
In 2005, my father and younger brother were rescued from a sinking ship, in the middle of the night, in stormy seas, miles from shore. Once the ship went down, and they entered the frigid waters of the Irish Sea, the odds of survival declined exponentially towards 0% with every passing minute.
Responding to the S.O.S radio calls, the RNLI scrambled a volunteer lifeboat crew from the Isle of Man. Thanks to their incredible training, skill and world class equipment, they managed to locate and rescue them from the water.
As a charity, all of the equipment, training and running costs required to successfully find and rescue people at sea, is funded by generous supporters.
With so many Nomadic watches used by sea farers, divers, sailers, swimmers and surfers, you never know when someone you love might get into trouble, but I do know the RNLI will never be far away.
For the whole of November we will be donating 10% of sales to the RNLI to support, in our small way, the lifesaving work they do.
In 2022 we raised over £2k for the RNLI and I hope that together, we can more than double that this year.
